San Diego’s Darvish Yu had a rough first half. It was the worst first half of his career.

Darvish started the Dodgers’ 2023 Major League Baseball home game against the New York Mets at Petco Park in San Diego, California, on Aug. 8 and allowed three runs on seven hits, three walks, one hit-by-pitch, and four strikeouts in five innings. He broke a 3-3 tie and didn’t get the win.

Darvish was replaced by Adrian Morejon in the sixth inning to close out the game. Darvish finished the first half with a 5-6 record and a 4.87 ERA in 15 games.

“Darvish had his worst first half in a season without injuries,” said Japan’s Junichi Sports, “crying over a narrow strike zone and bad luck. His 58 percent strike rate (58 of 100 pitches) was second only to his April 4 start against Arizona (59 percent) when he pitched in the sixth inning.”

San Diego signed Darvish to a massive six-year, $108 million contract before the season. He’s in the first year of that deal and hasn’t lived up to expectations.
