Serie A Golden Age, Matheus, who was at the center of it, “played with the determination to die”

Legendary German midfielder Matheus recalled that he gave everything to lead Inter Milan to win the Serie A title in 1989.

English Premier League (EPL) fans these days might think like this. Football today is the purest, most advanced form and the best game. It is true that the huge amount of money made the EPL the most fun, but those who witnessed Italian football in its heyday from the late 80s to the 90s will object.

From Diego Maradona, Roberto Baggio and George Weah to Paolo Maldini, Zinedine Zidane and Gabriel Batistuta. The best players of all time showed off their best skills as they led Italy’s golden age.

Matheus played for Inter Milan from 1988 to 1992, winning Italian Serie A, UEFA Cup and Ballon d’Or. Currently working as an ambassador for Munich, he recalled how high the level of Italy was at the time in an interview with ‘PopoTwo’. 슬롯사이트

“It was an amazing time” Matheus remembers the glitz of Serie A. “Italian football was at its peak with the best players. Maradona, Ruud Gullit, Baggio, Marco van Basten…they were all our rivals!

At the time Matheus was active, Italy could only register three foreign players per team. Inter Milan spent all of that quota on the Germans. Matheus led the team alongside striker Jurgen Klinsmann and defender Andreas Breme.

“It was an honor to be able to share that moment with the German players,” Matheus said in an interview with PopoTwo. “Off the pitch, the three of us were just treated as ‘Italians’ from different countries.” said.

“We spent time together, whether in the restaurant or at home. We were all the more united to reciprocate our success on the pitch and we really appreciated winning Serie A and the UEFA Cup.”
