“I feel good,” returning ‘unifying force’ Cuevas throws out of bullpen, will return to action on Sunday

William Cuevas (KT Wiz) completed his first bullpen appearance. He will make his comeback game on the 17th.

KT announced on Sept. 9 that it has signed William Cuevas for a total of $450,000 (approximately 582 million won) as a replacement for foreign pitcher Bo Schuler.

Cuevas joined KT in the 2019 season and went 33-22 with a 3.89 ERA in 82 games and 486⅓ innings over four seasons. Most notably, in 2021, he pitched seven innings of one-hit ball and struck out three to win the tiebreaker against the Samsung Lions in the KBO’s first game in 35 years. He also pitched in Game 1 of the Korean Series against the Doosan Bears, allowing one run (one earned) in 7⅔ innings to lead the team to its first-ever combined title.

Cuevas parted ways with KT last season due to an elbow injury and spent this season with the Triple-A Oklahoma City Dodgers of the Los Angeles Dodgers organization. In 11 appearances (nine starts) in the minors, he went 2-2 with a 6.14 ERA.

Cuevas arrived in South Korea via Incheon International Airport on Dec. 12. He pitched out of the bullpen on Thursday before facing the SSG Landers in the 2023 Shinhan Bank SOL KBO League at SSG Landers Field in Incheon.

Cuevas threw a total of 32 pitches. He tested five pitches: a four-seam fastball, a two-seam fastball, a cutter, a curveball, and a changeup. He finished his bullpen without any issues and will return to action on Sunday against the Suwon Samsung Lions.

Manager Lee Kang-cheol, who watched Cuevas pitch in the bullpen, said, “I’m relieved. I said hello to him today. He told me not to worry about him. He said he’ll do well. I hope he can lead us well in the starting lineup.”

“Before joining the team, he pitched in the United States until recently, and his bullpen pitching today was normal,” Lee said.

After the bullpen, Cuevas said, “I’m a little less tired than I thought I would be. I feel like I threw a better bullpen, so I’m happy with that. I’m ready to pitch in the game.”토토사이트
