Defending champion newcomer throws fastball faster than previous left-handed pitcher once
SSG’s new foreign pitcher, Roenis Elias (35), started his KBO career with a bang. Despite giving up three runs, including a two-run homer, he went five innings and got help from his teammates to get the win. Compared to last year’s championship teammate, left-handed foreign pitcher Shawn Morimando, the pitching was better.
Elias threw 91 pitches on April 24 against Literature LG, allowing four hits, four walks and two strikeouts in five innings. He gave up a walk to Kim Min-sung in the top of the second inning, a two-run homer to Lee Jae-won, and a single to left to Kim Min-sung in the top of the fourth, but no further damage was done.
The left-hander touched 150 kilometers per hour on his fastball and had good movement on his changeup, his deciding pitch. His third pitch is a curveball, and how he mixes his fastball, changeup, and curveball will determine his success in the KBO. While Morimando is a command pitcher, Elias is more of a reliever.
Morimando has an average fastball velocity of 145.2 kilometers per Statistiz, while Elias has an average fastball velocity of 146.9 kilometers per SSG’s Trackman. The key for Elias is how he utilizes his fastball.
After the game, shortstop Park Sung-hyun, who saw Elias pitch in front of him, expressed his excitement. “It was pretty good,” he said. His pitches were excellent and the way he ran the game was positive,” he said. Manager Kim Won-hyung said, “It was Elias’ first game against a strong team, and he pitched five innings. Congratulations on the first win and good preparation, and we expect better pitching in the next game.”
Elias said, “I think everyone needs a period of adjustment in the first league. It’s hard to get a good result in your first game, so I’m happy to get the win today, especially in a place like Korea where the level of baseball is so high,” he smiled.
“When I was preparing for my first start, I tried to stick to my routine and do what I was used to doing. It was my first game, so I was a little nervous. I think I need to focus on throwing strikes in the first inning and manage my walks in the next game.”토토사이트
“I wanted to win because it was my first time playing in front of my Korean fans and my family who traveled across the Pacific Ocean with me. My family came to the stadium to cheer me on, so I wanted to show them a victory as well,” he said, adding that this motivated him.
“In the future, I want to contribute to the team to win the championship, which is not only my goal but the goal of all my teammates,” Elias concluded, “and I will show the fans that we are giving our best every moment.
