“$400 million in hitting alone” elbow injury → pitcher rest, still No. 1 free agent…expect at least $500 million
The Los Angeles Angels’ Shohei Ohtani, 29, is considered the biggest name in the upcoming free agent market.
Ohtani is eligible for free agency after this season. While many expected him to be traded, the Angels did not, and an extension is unlikely, making it almost certain that he will hit the free agent market.
Ohtani, who is having one of his best seasons as a hitter this year, going 30-for-46 (146-for-480) with 44 homers, 92 RBIs and a 1.072 OPS in 130 games, and as a pitcher, going 10-5 with a 3.14 ERA in 23 games (132 innings), was diagnosed with elbow damage in the first game of a doubleheader against Cincinnati on April 24 (ET) after feeling something wrong with his elbow and going off the mound. The decision to undergo surgery has yet to be made.
MLB.com, the official site of Major League Baseball, released its rankings of players eligible for free agency in the upcoming offseason on Monday. Ohtani, who was expected to sign a $600 million contract before his injury, remained at the top of the list.
“With damaged elbow ligaments, Ohtani may have to undergo a second Tommy John surgery (elbow ligament reconstruction), but he should still be considered the biggest free agent this year,” MLB.com wrote.
Aaron Judge, who won the American League MVP last season at age 30 after batting .301 (177-for-570) with 62 homers, 131 RBIs and a 1.111 OPS in 157 games, became a free agent after the season and re-signed with the Yankees for nine years and $360 million. Judge’s contract could serve as a reference point for Ohtani.카지노사이트
According to MLB.com, “Last year Jersey, who is a year older than Ohtani, signed a nine-year, $360 million deal. By comparison, Ohtani is eligible for a 10-year, $400 million deal based on hitting alone. Without the injury, he would have gotten more money, but with many speculating that he could return to pitching as early as 2025, Ohtani’s contract is likely to be worth $500 million.” The Angels, Dodgers, San Francisco, and Seattle are among the teams expected to sign him.
Ohtani easily tops the free agent list, followed by Cody Bellinger (Cubs) at No. 2, Matt Chapman (Toronto) at No. 3, Blake Snell (San Diego) at No. 4, Josh Hader (San Diego) at No. 5, and Julio Urias (Dodgers) at No. 6, 7th Aaron Nola (Philadelphia), 8th Eduardo Rodriguez (Detroit), 9th Lucas Giolito (Angels), 10th Jordan Montgomery (Texas), and bonus Yoshinobu Yamamoto (Orix).
